The ID Theft Center found that of the roughly 250 data breaches publicly reported in the United States between Jan. 1 and Jun. 12, victims blamed the largest share of incidents on theft by employees (18.4 percent) and hacking (18 percent). Taken together, breaches attributed to these two types of malicious attacks have increased about 10 percent over the same period in 2008.

MasterCard Requires QSA for Level 1 and 2 Merchants
MasterCard recently announced changes to their Site Data Protection program. The updates now require Level 1 merchants and level 2 merchants to engage a Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) to validate compliance with the PCI DSS. Additionally, MasterCard redefined the Service provider thresholds and levels to align with Visa. Level 1 service providers are those that store, transmit, or process more than 300,000 MasterCard transactions/accounts per year and level 2 are those that handle less than 300,000.

A URL-shortening service that condenses long Web addresses for use on micro-blogging sites like Twitter was hacked over the weekend, sending millions of users to an unintended destination, a security researcher said today.
